Abstract

This article analyses the changes of the social position of women according to whether or not
they work outside the home in Spain, between 1916 and 1991. The source used is the 1991
Sociodemographic Survey. The social position of the husband provides the position relating to the
wife. The results highlight the importance of the woman’s educational level for ther position in the
marriage market, and the depreciation of the conjugal value of the housewife as compared with that
of the working woman.
