In this essay the author provides a narrative of his intellectual journey,
covering half a century of reflection and research in the human sciences.
He does so from an interpretive, historicist and communitarian
perspective. He sees his initial intellectual interests and later evolution
as responses (with their mix of committment and distance) to a series of
challenges and conversations in different communities of debate and
situated in different historical frameworks (primarily Spain, France and
the United States). He suggests an argument and a path for addressing
the tension between a theory of civil society understood in a broad
sense and the limits on the horizon (and the flight forward) of advanced
modernity.
