This article serves as an introduction to the RevistaEspañola de Investigaciones Sociológicas review’s issue devoted to «Globalization and immigration». It starts off by highlighting some of the changes that are occurring in migratory flows (such as their feminization) and in policies for regulating immigration (such as the European policies). It then goes on to give a brief summary of some of the theoretical and political debates going on today over immigration within the framework of globalization: transnationality, citizenship and integration, European identity and multiculturality. The second part of the article presents the academic development of migration theories through a comparison of the contents of the Handbook of
International Migration, published in 1999, and the articles included in the single-subject issue of the 2004. International Migration Review that came out in 2004. Lastly, it summarizes the articles and research notes of this single-subject issue of the Revista Española de Investigaciones Sociológicas, setting them in the context of these theoretical developments.
