Abstract

This paper compares the psychological impact experienced by migrants and natives during the spring 2020 lockdowns in Madrid (Spain). We utilize data from the 2017 National Health Survey, and the Madrid Covid Household Panel. Overall, the population at risk of psychological morbidity peaked at around 60 percent during the lockdowns. The behavior of migrants and natives’ behavior is strikingly similar. A single dimension emerges wherein migrants are notably more psychologically vulnerable. The reduction in income imposed a greater loss of mental wellbeing on migrants than on natives. The evidence provided highlights a migrant population which, even under exceptional circumstances, register identical levels of distress than natives. However, the economic vulnerability faced by migrants exposes them to greater distress.
