Mothers' employment trajectories in Spain: differences by social class and use of parental leaves

This paper analyses the patterns of employment trajectories of first-time mothers in Spain over 20 years, the factors that influence their employment attachment during the family formation stage and their occupation at the end of the childbearing stage. Retrospective data from the 2018 Fertility Survey have been used for this purpose. The results of the sequence and cluster analysis distinguish four types of employment trajectories: secure, uncertain, intermittent and disengaged. Multinomial logistic regression models confirm a social stratification of these trajectories according to educational level, own and partner's occupation. Access to maternity leave is also revealed as a factor closely related to the type of work-life balance path observed.
