The Legitimation of Sexual Violence through Pictorial Works

Art pieces represent how the collective gaze, social relations and power, among other issues, are socially constructed. The social hermeneutic analysis that we present here is focused on the legitimation of sexual violence in images, which is perpetuated through various mechanisms such as symbolic referents in the titles, benevolent representation of the aggressors, minimizing the damage to the victims and, on many occasions, attributing responsibility or blame to them. In addition, the complacent gaze of the artist and the spectator favors a pleasurable, exalted or minimized vision of violence. It is necessary to continue analyzing and revealing how we look and who we look at, because a critical gaze is capable of transforming what our desires, our body and our identity represent, but also our societies.
