Concept and measurement of social autocratisation
Keywords:
Social attitudes, Autocratisation, Quantitative Measurement, North Africa and the Middle EastAbstract
This article proposes a conceptual and measurement system that allows to distinguish on a global scale different manifestations (intensity, nature and typology) of one of the most relevant and yet least explored social processes in comparative terms: social autocratisation. As an example, we put in practice our proposal to observe North Africa and the Middle East between 2010 and 2022. As a result, we discover processes of social autocratisation in Morocco, Turkey, and Iraq (which share intensity and model but differ in their nature and contextualisation), as well as a significant reduction in the level of social autocracy in Egypt. The unknowns opened up by these findings stimulate multiple avenues of case study and comparative study on a regional and global scale
