National Populism and a Democracy of Inmediacy

Populism has established itself as a key player in liberal societies. This poses a challenge of adaptation for systems like democracy, which, by definition, is driven by constant innovation and redefinition to preserve its normative realm. In this article, I address the underlying long-term reasons that help explain the electoral, social, and cultural success of a variant of populism: right-wing populism or national populism. The framework for understanding its rise must be traced to recent precipitating and amplifying factors, such as the economic and migration crises, but above all, to the transformations of high-speed societies and the ability of right-wing populism to offer seemingly effective political responses to citizens’ demands.
