This article discusses the variety of types or dimensions of implicit
discourse. Specifically, a typological characterisation is proposed,
based on the intentions of the producer of the discourse, including a
distinction between four basic dimensions: insinuated discourse,
hidden discourse, ‘failed’ discourse and underlying discourse. Some
examples are provided of each dimension, and then it is held that the
proposed typology is useful for the sociological analysis of implicit
discourse, that is, for its detection and interpretation.
