Given the imminent disappearance of the traditional census in Spain and its replacement with a register-based census, this work provides a discussion on the implications and challenges of this change. For this, a cartography of global census methodologies and a genealogy of recent changes occurring in various countries of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) have been presented, highlighting the political, social, methodological and technical debates that have arisen. Finally, Spain has been considered within this context. This study is based on secondary sources, including a review of documents from the Spanish National Statistical Institutes and proceedings from European Statisticians Conferences.
