Abstract

In this article we argue that to use the concept of «identity» in order to explain some instances
of social action is only possible after undergoing the concept to a double reduction. On the one
hand, it is possible to understand identity as mere identification with desires and preferences; on the
other hand, with norms and values. This conclusion can be drawn, first, from a metatheoretical
analysis of sociological propositions such as «X does M because is Y». Second, when we analyse
identity in relation to functional systems it seems clear that identity is based on norms and values.
Social identity, then, can be understood as the complex frame of interests, preferences, norms and
values with which the individual identifies himself.
