Cultural gap? Perceptions of Spanish political, economic and military elites on the Armed Forces
Keywords:

The assessment of the armed forces by different elites constitutes a significant factor in civil-military relations. The convergence or divergence in values and perceptions among them regarding military administration, i.e., the existence or absence of a cultural gap, can impede the development of defence policy. This research analyses the perceptions of three groups of Spanish elites (political, business, and military) regarding the Armed Forces, based on 46 in-depth structured interviews and 93 survey respondents, to verify whether such a gap exists. The main outcomes of this study are: (i) some social stereotypes are also reproduced among the elites, and (ii) there is a greater convergence between military and economic elites.
