This study tackles the possibilities of negotiating and initiating changes in the couple, by
questioning the principles of liberal negotiation and introducing the nuances that allow us
to establish the type of interchange that can be produced between two individuals situated in
different positions. The term «things private» is introduced, which far from having connotations
of intimacy is understood as the interaction established by the couple in their interpersonal
relationship with respect to the social, economic and political medium. The triangulation of
public, domestic and private facets constitutes the key for understanding the possibilities for
negotiation between two people. The omnipresence of the public facet and the sloping away
of the domestic in favour of the private is noted. Lastly, a typology of four types of couples is
established according to how these three spheres interact.
