The work of Wait and the factories of Time. The case of logistics and transport companies in Dutch Brabant
Keywords:
Waiting Work, Time Factories, Logistics Reason, FlexworkerAbstract
The growing pressure on citizens to undertake productive activities at any time, facilitated by the deregulation of employment and the working day, forces a continuous rationalization of their reproduction times (rest, consumption and care). In this area, new activities appear, new technical devices and new groups of subordinate workers, dedicated to producing or freeing up that time, and governed by a new Logistics Reason.
The work of waiting in time factories (logistics storage and distribution centers of different sectors located in international transport hub regions) seems to have novel and specific characteristics that need to be investigated and that are central to the current phase of development of the capitalism. To analyze these transformations, we have carried out an ethnographic case study on logistics workers in Dutch Brabant, a region influenced by the port of Rotterdam, the most important in Europe and the second in the world in terms of goods transit.
