Why the Democrats lost the working class

The victory of Donald Trump and the Republican Party in the November 2024 presidential elections in the United States has been based on the support of a new electoral coalition of which a sector of the working class, which traditionally supported the Democratic Party, has been part. This article analyzes the reasons that have led a sector of the working class to abandon the Democratic Party. It shows that this abandonment has been a decades-long process and a consequence of the impact on the industrial working class of structural changes in the economy, which led the party to try to broaden its electoral base and attract other voters, particularly university graduates who have pushed the party to adopt policies that have alienated a sector of the working class.
