In this paper the relationship between female incorporation into the labour market and the
different European welfare systems is tackled. First, the most relevant literature about this topic is
reviewed. Second, a general view of the evolution of female activity rates in the fifteen member
states of the European Union (before the last enlargement) is shown. Finally, the article enquires
into the factors that have most influence over the permanence of women outside the labour market,
distinguishing between individual determinants and determinants related to welfare regimes.
