Abstract

Despite recent advances in biotechnology and biogenetics the donation of blood, organs and tissues
continues to depend basically on protagonists (donors) from outside the biomedical system. Access to
blood products (in the specific case of transfusion) is done through a process of desacralization of
blood. The arrangement must be set within the framework of a process of civilization of the bodily
experience. In the analysis of willingness to donate blood, the development of the altruistic attitude is
present in the Catholic cultural tradition through the applicability of the body/soul relationship, which
is in total harmony with biomedical practice.
