The aim of this study is to analyse the reproductive patterns of the
immigrant population and to evaluate their impact on, and implications
for, demographic dynamics in Spain. The general hypothesis is that
migrant fertility is closely related to the fact and circumstances of
migration. Using the 2007 National Immigrant Survey, the results show
the existence of a clear fertility pattern. This pattern is characterised by
reduced fertility before and during migration, a strong recovery after
becoming settled, and a subsequent reduction. The main implication is
that this will lead to a significant reduction in migrant fertility, since the
inflows have been reduced and the 'recovery' period of the fertility rates
of immigrants who arrived before 2007 has passed.
