This article analyses how the company influences the region in which it carries out its
activities. The authors claim that the company could not exist outside the social, cultural, politicas
and economic fabric of society. They describe where the industry is located, identify the dynamic
economies, as Marshall called them, as well as regions where productive synergies have been
generated and, in recent decades, studied by economist and sociologists. The article also describes
the dynamics of clusters, industrial districts and, finally, some of the more important aspects of
local labour markets.
